BACK TO PAST WITH “THE GREAT GATSBY”

Back to past with "The Great Gatsby"

A grat hype has largely anticipated the movie of the year: Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, the latest film adaptation of renown novel by F. Scott Fitzgeral.

From the movie to the cult phenomenon the step was short, also thanks to some fabulous names collaborating in the costumes creation. Roaring twenties were certainly the starting point – with those fabrics embellished with sparkling sequins and fringes, rich furs, and cascades of pearls and crystals – but the actual revival was perfectly twisted with a fresh feeling.

Oscar winner costume designer Catherine Martin went fishing in 20 years of Miuccia Prada’s archive for the movie. From a baby-doll with crystal pendants, crazy furs, and déco-style accessories, there was everything she needed to revamp the spirit of the 20s – with just some re-design required. This led to a collection of over 40 sparkling pieces, ranging from cocktail attires and gowns.

Well 20s are not dead, or at least they are very contemporary to our spirit and aesthetic we must say: who wouldn’t want to show up to a party as a modern-days Daisy Buchanan? We’d just need to keep a few bullets points in mind: for cocktail you should go for light simply cut dresses in light colors and dress up for the night with fabrics richly embroidered. And no shiness for accessories: long pearl necklaces, big bracelets, precious little clutches, pins, headbands and tiny bonnets on the hair.

But of course nowadays women love to dress as men sometimes, and yes, Jay Gatsby is such a good example of refinement mixed in a perfect balance with excentricity.

Take his three-piece cream suit or the pastels ones, going all together with a selection of great details. The whole movie is full of male outfits vaguely inspired to the preppy – truly American- style and the 500 perfect suits were made by Brooks Brothers.

The look was classic, of course, but with that thrilling twist that we know it’s going to be seen over and over in the near future.
