A little bad taste is like a nice splash of paprika. We all need a splash of bad taste—it’s hearty, it’s healthy, it’s physical. I think we could use more of it. No taste is what I’m against.”

Diana Vreeland, the editor-in-chief of American Vogue for almost ten years, was an eccentric style icon and the pioneer of “no-good taste”.

She used to state: “Elegance is innate. It has nothing to do with being well dressed. Elegance is refusal.” And well, her first real job, was actually running a column titled Why don’t you? in Harper’s Bazaar magazine. There she gave plenty of space to her fantasy, sending out original and unheard style advises for the wealthy American upper class women. Her revolutionary eye made up her reputation, she was constantly looking for new expressions of genius, that had to be powerful, unexpected, exaggerated, never predictable.

Vreeland wasn’t beautiful but her allure was vibrant, she build up for herself a foolish sparkling empire, she madly tryed to break taboos and conventions, showing new faces of beauty, those that comes out of personality, excentricity and a unique take on elegance.

She was a maverick, obsessed with the color red, in love with ethnic jewelry and proud of her kabuki-like makeup. A recent documentary tells her story and it still feels truly contemporary.

Her professional climb was quick and changed the system of fashion for ever, but after the financial crisis in the 70s, Vreeland got fired from Vogue.

She was too ahead of her time, that’s the reason that was reported, the society had changed and no space for dreams was left. No space for her vuluptous, expensive, imaginative universe.
