prada meets gatsby_privategriffe

At the time when The Great Gatsby go tinto theaters last spring the buzz was all about the crazy set design and scenes and, guess what? The clothes. Well, the costumes is probably what is really going to last of Baz Luhrmann’s movie. Fur in many colors, shining lamé, taffetas or velvets made their part and the spirit of Charleston was revamped.

Here we are, the exhibition Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby, about the collaboration between Miuccia Prada and costume designer Martin, keeps travelling and it now lands in Shanghai at Prada IFC boutique. Catherine Martin has under her belt films like Ballroom, Romeo + Giulietta, Moulin Rouge and the set design of La Bohéme for Broadway. The show, hitting China after New York and Tokyo, unveils Miuccia Prada’s hidden sesnsibility, that was in some way in the DNA of her runway collections.

This is certainly a remark of the close collaboration of cinema and fashion in setting up the image of an era. There are a few examples in recent history, one is obviously the case of Giorgio Armani, known for many collaborations among which stands American Gigolo and Eyes Wide Shut. Now, for The Great Gatsby movie all items have been re-designed according to philological necessities. And despite that the image emanating from the movie is certainly the one of today’s world.
