The Birkin bag

Among the iconic accessories that have made the history of fashion there is one that holds a special place: the Birkin by Hermès.

More than just a bag, it’s a legend, named after actress Jane Birkin – the muse that inspired its creation.

Birkin met by chance the then designer at Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas, on a plain Paris-London in 1984. During the flight she started to explain Dumas how difficult it was to find bag large enought to keep everything she wanted that was at the same time comfortable and elegant, an suitable for a weekend abroad! At that point Dumas asked to make an alteration on her own bag.

So he added an additional pouch and handed the bag back to Birkin a few weeks later: and so the legend of Birkin bag started. The item soon switched from functional accessory to object of desire: such a thing that all women wanted as a sign of a certain kind od cultivated and priviledged life.

Things have not changed much after that, Birkin bag is still an excellent status symbol, only too refined and precious to be bought by instinct, and even celebrities accept to be on waiting lists in order to have one.

Among them, how not to mention Victoria Beckham? The ex Spice Girl has a collection of more than 100 copies of the most prestigious and extravagant, for a total value of approximately £ 1.5 million.

But the value of a Birkin is not so much in the money as you know (the price ranges between 5,000 and 50,000 dollars), but it’s all about exclusive taste and access. And those lists with more than an year of waiting speaks for themselves.
