The safari jacket

When European people moved to Africa in the nineteenth century started to dress in light colors and functional items suitable for the new lifestyle and climate and the look happened to be know as colonial style.

Fashion borrowed the look of course, even out of Africa.

Anyway, the real consacration of the colonial look happened only in 1968, when French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent presented his Safari collection, where he was brave enought to introduce sportswear items in the world of haute couture.

The key piece in the collection was the bush jacket – an item made in beige cotton, with a lot of pockets, long to the waist and tied with a belt. In a picture that soon became iconic, sensual model Veruska wears the safari jacket with a plunging neckline and and a gun on her shoulders.

There is another shot – quite well known as well – that captures the designer together with his muses of all time, Betty Catroux and Loulou de la Falaise. Each of them in the picture wears a different version of the jacket at the opening of YSL boutique in Rive Gauche.

The bush jacket is a timeless piece, even it’s not maybe a passe-par-tout, not for the everyday but for the dream. Wear it to travel, for real, or just with your mind.
